Surah Al-Ma’idah 11-2 Intro

Surat-Al-Mai’dah 11/2/08

Mai’-dah = table/food/feast. Revealed after Hijjri so is considered a Madina Surah. It is named after the food given to Esa/Jesus (pbuh) to confirm his Messenger-ship. Allah said if I give the Mai’dah to you then you must take a covenant from your followers that they will never disbelieve after this.

The followers of Esa were Jews and there were doubts about Esa from the Jews. Esa claimed he was confirming the message of Musa, and the Jews denied him. They even degraded him. His followers had some doubts and wanted proof. read more

Surat-al-Ma’idah 11-16 V. 15-34

Surat-al-Ma’idah

  1. 15-34

Review: Last time we finished talking about the covenants that Allah made with the Jews and the Christians, and that they broke their covenants and were therefore punished. No matter your religion if you break your covenants Allah will punish you even in this life. This surah is about covenants and fulfillment of contracts/covenant obligations.

Remember in surah Baqara when Allah said to Adam, you have a sworn enemy in Shaitan due to his jealousy and arrogance. You are safe from him if you stick to your covenant. You are excellent and you know your enemy, enjoy yourself Just don’t eat from this tree. Adam and Eve broke this covenant. Although they were forgiven for their transgression they had to suffer the consequences of their actions. read more

Surat-al-Mai’dah 11-23 V. 33- 47

Surat-al-Ma’idah

V. 33-47

V. 33- Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment”

Last time we finished discussing those who rebel in society, not necessarily a crime, but a rebellion against the government. A disloyal group that establishes posts or bases of rebellion and rob and harass citizens of the society. This happened at the time of the Prophet a group set up a rebellious base outside of Madinah. A crime has different punishment than these people who set up in open rebellion. Allah said when you capture them depending on their crimes you execute them, crucify them, expel them or imprison them. read more

Surat-al- Mai’dah 11-30 V. 44-56

Surat-Al-Ma’idah

v. 44-56

V. 44-50-Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah ] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah , and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers. And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution. But whoever gives [up his right as] charity, it is an expiation for him. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the wrongdoers. And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous. And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient. And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allah is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ. And judge, [O Muhammad], between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away – then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient. Then is it the judgement of [the time of] ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allah in judgement for a people who are certain [in faith].”

Allah revealed the Torah full of light and guidance. The Prophets, the Priests and the Rabbis were entrusted with the Towrat/Torah and were in charge of keeping it and implementing it, in order for them to live and rule by it. They were the witnesses of the Prophets that they received it, and were supposed to keep it intact.

The reason people don’t rule by the rule of Allah, is because they fear people or to gain some worldly benefit. If you do not rule by the rule of Allah for these two reasons then you are an unbeliever. Muslims must follow and rule by Shariah.

Takfir and Hijra- These terms refer to where the rulers are judged to be unbelievers so the people migrate. This is for the so-called Muslim rulers that don’t follow the shariah of Islam. If you can fight them you should fight them to remove their power.

Ordering good and forbidding bad is implementing Shariah, but doing punishments based on Shariah are for the Islamic government. Once you determine that the ruler is an unbeliever don’t just assassinate the person. This has been proven to only make things worse. In Somalia and Pakistan for example after they removed the leader there was nothing but chaos. You must give Daw’ah and change the society and bring reform.

The Shariah of Muhammad pbuh is similar to the Shariah of Musa pbuh. Because Esa pbuh couldn’t implement the Shariah the Christians did away completely with the Shariah of Musa, even though Esa never brought a new Shariah or said to do away with it.

Many problems start when individuals or small groups want to go around and implement Shariah themselves. Or there are countries where the Shariah is implemented on the weak and poor, but not the rich and powerful.

Nowhere even if it is the state does Islam say that you kill unbelievers. Even if they commit apostasy alone you can’t just kill them.

Jihad can only be declared by an Islamic state. Not all Muslims have to support the Jihad unless it is declared by the Khalifa/Central Islamic power.

All major Shariah is the same between Muhammad and Musa (pbut). The law of retribution is similar. Eye for an Eye is for something purposely done, unless the person chooses to forgive. If a person does physical damage accidentally then there is compensation made. If you do not implement the law of retribution then you are among the unjust.

The Injeel is a combination of the Torah/revelation given to Musa, the Zaboor/revelation given to Dawud and what was revealed to Esa. The Christians lost it and refused to follow Musa. The people given the Towrat/Torah are to live and rule according to it or they are misguidedThe people of the Injeel must live and rule according to the injeel or they are misguided. The Qur’an is given and people should live and rule according to it or they are misguided. If Allah wanted he could give the same book repeatedly, but the test is for people to believe in it.

Whatever good the Jews and Christians do we must compete with them in doing good. We will all return to Allah and all the issues between us will be explained. Do not follow their desires and be cautious they might cause you to not follow what Allah has given.

The Qur’an is the dominating book. Whatever is in the Qur’an and not in what the Jews and Christians have, then it is not the real Towrat, or Injeel. Those who doubt the Shariah of Allah, who feel it is incorrect they are not a Muslim. Who has better ruling than Allah?

Oh you who believe do not take the Jews and the Christians as protectors, allies, supporters, guardians, or advisors specifically in the subject of war, politics, and religion. This is a firm command! They are protectors only to themselves. Anyone who takes them in these aspects then they are among them.

The verse indicates that there are some people or groups that will take them in these aspects. These people have put a wall between themselves and the guidance of Allah. There are some that are obviously taking them as protectors. They have sicknesses in their heart and will race to do so. They will say they are afraid that destruction will come upon them when asked why they disobeyed Allah.

When this verse was given no one in Madinah would even consider doing this, but today this verse is totally relevant. Many people today believe the only protection comes from taking Christians and Jews as allies. Example: Muslims in U.S. who say Islam Christianity and Judaism are the almost the same thing so why don’t we remove the differences so we can all live in harmony. They do not even believe in their own arguments their hearts are sick and full of hypocrisy.

In the Qur’an if it says Allah might do something then it means Allah surely will. Allah says he might open unplanned conditions and circumstances for these people to put them in a state of regret and sorrow. This is the time when the true believer will speak. The believers will say to them “didn’t they promise you full protection and that they would never abandon you?” The believers will take over= Fatt-Ha

v. 51-60- O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, “We are afraid a misfortune may strike us.” But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful. And those who believe will say, “Are these the ones who swore by Allah their strongest oaths that indeed they were with you?” Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers. O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion – Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah ; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. Your ally is none but Allah and [therefore] His Messenger and those who have believed – those who establish prayer and give zakah, and they bow [in worship]. And whoever is an ally of Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed – indeed, the party of Allah – they will be the predominant.”

These verses were revealed for the future and we can see it happening now today and are evolving.

1. Christians and Jews become the protectors of each other.

2. Some of the Muslims will join them.

3. The justification for these Muslims is: they say they don’t want the wrath of the Christians and Jews, to avoid war.

4. Political and Military opening, and unexpected matters from Allah which will give the hypocrites sorrow and regret, and the true believers will have power. The Jewish, Christian, “Muslim” alliance will break apart.

5. Allah (SWT) gives us the proper criteria for forming alliances

Surat-al- Mai’dah 12- 7 V. 51-63

Surat-al-Mai’dah Dec. 7

V. 51-63

V. 51- O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.”

These verses were referring to the future when they were revealed. Many scholars say these verses are referring to our current time. Why do they say this?

1. Phenomenon that never occurred before: The people of the Book have become protectors of one another. Never before in history did the Christians and Jews protect each other. Since the 20thcentury all the people of the book have drawn together to protect one another. Christians have pledged to protect Christians everywhere and to protect Jews/ State of Israel.

2. Another Phenomenon for Muslims was the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. They also took steps to prevent another Caliph.

A. They secularized the society, divided secular/religious education

B. They created Nationalistic divisions between Muslim populations. They protect these political borders.

C. Established the state of Israel to guard against the development of a Caliph. During WWI the British decided to split the Ottoman Empire. They promised protection for some countries in exchange for becoming their allies, after the war the British left them on their own.

Allah told us “Oh you who believe do not take The Jews and Christians as protectors; they are only protectors of themselves. If you take them as protectors then you will be counted among them, and you will be deprived of the guidance of Allah.”

V. 52-53So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, “We are afraid a misfortune may strike us.” But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful. And those who believe will say, “Are these the ones who swore by Allah their strongest oaths that indeed they were with you?” Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers.

“You will see those who have sicknesses in their hearts rush/compete to take the Jews and Christians as protectors.” “When you ask them why they do it, they will say, we did it to avoid disasters, we are afraid we will be destroyed, or that this is the way to protect our future.”

Allah will cause two things to happen:

1. Al FatH- victory, conquest, opening, some non-Islamic land will become an Islamic land. This land will guarantee the spread of Islam. It will be a critically important location to allow the spread of Islam.

2. Another Matter accompanying the FatH that is unknown will cause great change in the world.

Whatever the non-believers fear and take all action to prevent, Allah will make it happen. Example: Pharaoh fearing the children of Israel and taking all steps to prevent them from getting freedom/power, he killed the males etc.

After the FatH and the other unknown matter the true believers will be given power to speak, and they will speak to the ones with sicknesses in their hearts, and they will regret what they had done, because they will see the consequences of their mistake.

The believers will ask them “Didn’t you receive a covenant from them to protect you and they didn’t; The ones you thought could protect you in the future don’t have the means to protect themselves.”

V.54-56- O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion – Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic.

There will be people in the Muslim Ummah who will become apostates. They will totally reject the authority of Islam. They will reject the Shariah of Allah. During the Khalifa of Abu Bakr people committed apostasy and rejected paying Zakah, and the Shariah.

If anyone of you commits apostasy, and rejects the authority of Islam, Allah will replace you with people who:

1.love Allah and Allah loves them.

2. They will bring the mercy and justice of Allah to everyone.

3. They will be humble to the believers,

4. They will be proud of their iman,

5. They will fight in the cause of Allah,

6. They fear no blame,

7. Their allegiance is only to Allah, his Messenger and the believers,

8. They establish salah, give the Zakah, perform extra worship, bow in worship often.

The Muslim rulers are being the opposite of these people today, they are not being just and merciful, they don’t love Allah, and they are not humble towards the believers. They are not proud of their deen, they fear people instead of Allah. They have divided loyalty.

v. 57- 58-O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah , if you should [truly] be believers. And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason.”

Oh you who believe, do not take those who mock the Deen of Allah, and take it as a joke as allies. Whether they are from the people of the Book or from the non-believers, they cannot be taken as an ally. If they mock individuals or cultural things, it is not the same as mocking the Deen of Allah. Examples: They mock the adhan or the prostration, they don’t understand what you are doing.

V. 59-63-Say, “O People of the Scripture, do you resent us except [for the fact] that we have believed in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed before and because most of you are defiantly disobedient?” Say, “Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah ? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of Taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way.” And when they come to you, they say, “We believe.” But they have entered with disbelief [in their hearts], and they have certainly left with it. And Allah is most knowing of what they were concealing. And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing. Why do the rabbis and religious scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been practicing.”

The people of the Book have and attitude of revenge towards the Muslims. They are full of hatred for Muslims for the past, conversions of Christians and taking Jerusalem. Tell them “You’re revenge is misplaced, we didn’t take anything from you we only spread the message of Allah,”Ask them “Do you hate us because we believe in what was given to us and what was given to you.Remind them of the people who rebelled against Musa, and how Allah transformed them into apes.

They claim they are believers but they really aren’t, the sign of their disbelief is that they rush to commit sins, and acts of aggression, they consume the interest, if it weren’t for some of the good priests and rabbis slowing them down, and warning them, they would have made their whole

Surat-al-Mai’dah 12-21 V. 51-69

Surat al Mai’dah

V.51-69

(If the national identity comes in conflict with Islam you must first be a servant of Allah, Islam takes priority over any other thing.)

The Islamic concept of revolt should be derived from the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he migrated to Medina and took over. The Quraish saw this as a revolt and had the battle of Badr. They came to remove the system established by Muhammad (pbuh). When they battled the bloodshed was minimal. The Prophet calculated every action to the end of the revolt, backup plans etc. The first backup plan was the Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia. If all other Muslims were destroyed those migrants could’ve carried on Islam. read more

Surat-al- Mai’dah 1- 4 V.67-89

Surat-Al-Maidah

V.67-89

  1. 67-76- “O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. Say, “O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.” And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people. Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those [before Him] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians – those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness – no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed. And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do. They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah , my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers. They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the third of three.” And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded. Say, “Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Knowing?”

Verses addressing those who believe that Esa/Jesus is God or a form of God. Allah has refuted this claim logically/rationally. Esa used to pray and say oh my lord, if Esa is God how can he pray, or who is he praying to, himself? This is irrational. He always used to say oh my Lord or Oh God, he wouldn’t do this if he is God.

For those who say God is a trinity of Father, son and holy ghost, he refutes this by saying Esa was a Messenger and just because he did miracles this doesn’t make him a deity, because all messengers did miracles.Esa and his Mother used to exhibit their human nature by eating, sleeping, going to the restroom, Allah is above all of these things.Esa was born from a mother, so he cannot be God, Allah is not born. read more

Surat Al Mai’dah Jan. 11

V. 90-96

V. 90- O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”

This verse is the final judgment from Allah about these things: Alcohol/intoxicants, Gambling, Azlam/ a form of making decisions by chance. Addiction in Islam is treated by a certain method. All three of these things cause addiction. Also for gambling and lottery you are depending on chance for financial transactions. Islam doesn’t allow us to leave finances to chance. Financial transactions in Islam must be based on certainty. Insurance is not allowed because many people pay in, but only a very few use the insurance money. Islamic insurance would give the money back to the people that paid in, that didn’t get used. read more

Surat-al-Ma’idah

V. 105-120

The theme of Surat-al Ma’idah is keeping covenants!

V. 105-O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allah is you return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do.”

This verse is often misunderstood by Muslims today and was also misunderstood in the past.

“Oh you who believe focus/concentrate on yourselves, and do not be afraid that those who’ve gone astray will harm you as long as you are guided.” It is often misunderstood to mean don’t pay attention to those who went astray, it means to focus and concentrate on perfecting ourselves. If we totally ignore misguided people then we are not enjoining the good and forbidding the bad. read more
